Legendary Forests was a hit with my group. And I introduced it to other players and they linked it as well. It is a game that allows players to talk and enjoy the time together, but still work hard to win the game.

Theme and What is it?

It is time to create a world that will make you never want to leave. It has to be the best and the most legendary. You will face off against other world builders who will work with the same materials that you have to see who can build the greatest forest world. You must try to plan ahead and make adjustments to your plans as you navigate the challenges of planet construction. By the end of this process, you will have a world all your own, one that you made from scratch. But will it be the best?

Legendary Forests is a tile laying game for 2-5 players.

Every player starts with the same 25 tiles. One player is selected as the Architect. The Architect shuffles their tiles and randomly removes five, placing them face down in the box. They then make a stack of the remaining tiles to draw from. Every player starts with tile #1 laid out in front of them. The Architect then draws the top card of their pile and lets everyone else know the tile number. Each player finds this tile and places it on their board, making sure to match each side. This process is repeated until all tiles have been played.

Whenever the Architect draws a tile that has a number set on a white background, each player selects a tree token to place on their tiles. Tree tokens must be played on their matching tile color. Players will score points for each full rune in this area. They score two points per full rune if the area is closed in and will only score one point if the area still has any open edges.

After the last tile has been played, each player totals their points and the player with the highest score wins the game!

I love tile laying games. Seeing Legendary Forest made me want to give it a try. After going through the rules, I saw that it was going to be a simple game to learn, but one that would have some great competitive opportunities. I liked that everyone laid the same tile each turn. That made it lots of fun to see how different each forest became at the end of the game. I thought that there would be some variation but not as much as there ended up being. No two forests were close to each other.

The group that I played with really enjoyed the game. They understood the rules and there were no issues during the game.

Game Build Quality

I only had one issue with quality. The box does not have a way to store the tiles. It is just an open box without an insert. I wish it had something to keep the tiles from moving all around the box. I don’t want them beating each other up and I would like to have them organized by color so setup would be faster.

Other than that, the components are all well done. The tree tokens are my favorite pieces. They are awesome cut outs and look great.

The artwork looks stellar and is actually very relaxing. The whole game has a bit of a zen feel to it and the art really allows players to feel that. The colors are vibrant and the matching color areas look very nice as them come together.

My favorite part of Legendary Forests is that everyone plays with the same set of tiles. At the end of the game I looked at each person’s forest to see how different they were even though we were all playing the same tile each round. It was fun to see how each person visualized something different and created different strategies.

I also enjoyed the simplicity of the game. It will be easy to teach to new players and it can be used at game nights.

Recommended age is 8+. Because the game is so simple, there is a very real possibility that younger players will enjoy this game and be able to be competitive. Even though it is very simple it should not be a turn off to more experienced gamers. There is still plenty for them to love in this game too.

Legendary Forests was a hit with my group. And I introduced it to other players and they linked it as well. It is a game that allows players to talk and enjoy the time together, but still work hard to win the game.

Even though I have an issue with the box and how the tiles sit willy nilly in it, that is not enough for me to not give it high recommendations, especially to fans of tile laying games. The art is eye-catching and very bright. The mechanics are simple enough to teach a new player in a matter of minutes, yet it still has enough depth to keep seasoned gamers happy.
