Theme and What is it?
In Moneybags, players have just pulled off a bank heist and now need to split the loot. The boss distributes the coins and the precious diamond (10 coins of value) between the bags while everyone else has their eyes shut. Then players begin play by stealing from those they think have a bigger share of the loot than them. This continues for a few rounds with those getting the most loot getting the most points.
When someone steals from you, you get to shake your bag and ask them to shake theirs so you can hear the clink and see the weight. If you think their moneybag is heavier than yours now, you can call them out on it! Be careful though. The weight and clink of the diamond is hard to know about and you might have more than you expected. If you do have the least of the two of you, you combine the loot and keep it all. if they have the least, they take your loot and you are out of the round.
Moneybags is a short and fast paced bluffing game where players battle their wills against each other. The strategies possible are endless and amusing when people start taking riskier gambles in each round. How you respond to them is everything. And how I walk away with all the loot is the most important part.
Game Build Quality
Moneybags comes with 6 bags, a bunch of coins, and a diamond. That is basically it. There are some scoring tokens for tracking how well you did in each round. It also has rules of course. A short rulebook that takes minutes to learn at the most. 30 minutes of play time seems an overestimate unless everyone is really “weighing” their choices too “heavily”. Forgive that. It had to be done.
Moneybags is as fun as your friends are. We had a blast stealing from each other, tricking each other with the diamond, and even just unexpectedly sealing our bags and scoring SOMETHING rather than risking it.
Age Range & Weight
9+ is fair. You need to be able to hold a bag from the top, count coins, and yell at your friends when they steal too much or trick you by not stealing too much. That is pretty easy and humans come ready to engage in these activities from a young age. Possibly even younger than 9 really. The rules are a few small sheets and take minutes to learn.
Moneybags is not the next new hit that will be in every single game collection ever. But it is a wonderful amusing filler game. Also, who doesn’t want to be a mobster for just a few minutes. What happens when someone has their loot absorbed and they are eliminated? Maybe they are truly eliminated! Maybe they are just sitting and sulking waiting for the next bag of loot to be split.
